Dietary Iron Bioavailability: A Simple Model That Can Be Used to Derive Country-Specific Values for Adult Men and Women

This paper reports on the testing of a new method to derive an estimated value for dietary iron bioavailability in low- and middle-income countries. The method uses dietary iron intake and serum ferritin for the population of interest, together with the physiological requirements of iron, in a predictive model to estimate the percentage of iron absorption from the diet for the target population at different levels of iron status.
